The publicly-sourced art installation, showcased at one of New York City’s cultural landmarks and featuring brand new designs for the 192 flags flying at The Rink, included work from Shantell Martin, Jeff Koons, Carmen Herrera, Christian Siriano, Marina Abramovic, Faith Ringgold, Hank Willis Thomas, Jenny Holzer, KAWS, Laurie Anderson, Sanford Biggers, Sarah Sze, Steve Powers, and Jessie Mahon. The public exhibition ran from August 1-16, 2020 and February 12-March 4, 2021.

In the aftermath of a pandemic, “home” has taken on a new meaning for many of us. Jessie created this piece to act as a gentle reminder that all the places we’ve been, all the feelings we’ve felt, and all the people we’ve met are with us. “Home” is wherever we are. Our homes follow us like small, silent companions reminding us of who we are and where we’ve come from.

THE PRACTICE OF LOOKING: a community art installation, NYCLU, 2023

In collaboration with the New York Civil Liberties Union, the New York affiliate of the ACLU, Jessie developed and curated a community art installation included in their annual benefit concert culminating in over 45 drawings created by the public.

Project Statement: “Blind contour, a drawing exercise popularized over a hundred years ago, is meant to help people practice their observation skills. For one minute, participants will draw each other without ever looking at the paper or lifting their pen. The goal is not to create realistic drawings. The portraits will instead be a silly mix of scribbles, imperfect forms, and goofy lines. The Practice of Looking is about the eye, hand, and mind working together rather than producing a polished, accurate drawing. It’s about building community through slowing down and really seeing one another.”

madison wells media hand painted murals, 2019

Madison Wells Media is an award-winning, independent entertainment company founded by Gigi Pritzker. Madison Wells develops, produces, and funds projects predominantly in the film, television and theatre space, while incubating content with partners who are aligned in their belief that good storytelling sparks important conversation.

Jessie was commissioned to design and install two hand-painted interior murals for Madison Wells Media’s office in Century City, Los Angeles. Including poses from the iconic ballet Swan Lake, this piece, “HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO REFOCUS THE LENS?” encourages us to engage in and question what beauty means to us today, how it’s changing, and from whom the seeds are spread.

A study of swans: historically admired and cherished for their outward appearance; and weeds: often unwanted yet they persist and bloom even in the harshest circumstances. This dreamlike piece, “WHAT, IN BEAUTY, IS ATTAINABLE?” interprets our society’s shifting perception of beauty and how appearances are not always a true reflection of reality.

collective arts brewing beer label “kiwi sorbet”, 2021

Collective Arts fuses the creativity of craft beverages with the inspired talents of artists from around the world. They feature limited-edition works of art on their labels, and work to ensure the liquid on the inside is as diverse and creative as the artists they feature.

Jessie made the illustration “Elephant Hands” during a period of time when she was experimenting with style and subject matter. Juxtaposing the bright green and purple hands with a deadpan face that says: “I’m over this” feels playful and relatable – it’s a little sweet and a little sour.

ars nova hand painted mural, 2019

Ars Nova is an award-winning, Non-For-Profit organization that exists to discover, develop and launch singular theater, music and comedy artists who are in the early stages of their professional careers. Jessie was commissioned to design and install a multi-wall, hand painted mural in the upstairs parlor of Ars Nova’s downtown performance space in the heart of Greenwich Village, Manhattan. This piece celebrates the building’s long history, overall renovation, and new chapter in Ars Nova’s story. Each image in the mural represents moments of possibility, growth, expansiveness, joy, connection, ideas, play, silliness, and community, and honors several milestones in Ars Nova’s journey that Jessie and Ars Nova’s Artistic Director, Jason Eagan, came up with together.
